Born on April 19, 1927 in Pfaffenberg near Obervellach (Carinthia).
From 1954 to 64 he attended the Vienna Academy of Arts (master class Prof. RC Andersen, evening act with Herbert Boeckl), then relocation to the Waldviertel – first in the castle Rosenau at Zwettl, then in an old farmhouse in Oberstrahlbach, later in another in Uttissenbach.
From 1967 to 1969 Grabmayr was assistant to Prof. Gustav Hessing at the Vienna Academy. During this time he also developed his artistic interest in dance, followed by many years of work in the Vienna State Opera and numerous pictures on the subject.
Numerous exhibitions in Germany and abroad – 1971 in the Würthle Gallery in Vienna, 1973 and 1977 in the Vienna Secession , in the 80s in Berlin, Munich, Zurich and others. On the occasion of his 75th birthday in 2002, a major retrospective at the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere.
The most important motifs of Grabmayr are the landscape and the human body, which he has increasingly depicted in strong colors and more abstract. His paintings are characterized by a multi-layered, pastose paint application, which allows them strong spatial presence, almost on the border with object painting. Franz Grabmayr died on June 8, 2015, the day of his exhibition opening of the Galerie Magnet.
